The farm is a small livestock farm. The southern end of the farm was designated a County Wildlife Site in 1980. There are a good number of trout in the stream and pond which hold mallard, moorhen and other waterfowl. Barn owl are found in the valley and nested in an Elm tree five metres from the farm until the tree was lost. Several pairs of buzzard can be seen and also nest in the valley. Peregrine hunt for pigeon in the woods along the stream. The flora is particularly interesting, notably some patches of Dorset Heath.
We are happy to take visitors on a farm walk during their stay, highlighting historical points of interest and wonderful views of the valley.
Many attractions are within a short ride such as golf, surfing and pony trekking. Other nearby places of interest include Truro, Perranporth, St. Ives and Falmouth along with many interesting surrounding villages. Porthtowan and Mount Hawke both have well stocked village stores and post offices. There is a spectacular coastal walk from Porthtowan to the National Trust beach of Chapel Porth and onwards to St. Agnes.
Feedback from our visitors
We stayed with four friends at the Old Basset Cottage while taking part in the Arc of Attrition trail running race by UTMB in January. Kathleen made us feel at home from the moment we arrived (despite our delayed arrival due to the storm). We had a wonderful stay and loved the cottage’s cozy charm and the scenic surroundings of Cornwall. Till next time!

A lovely cottage in a lovely location with lovely hosts! Old Basset cottage is very well equipped, spotlessly clean and has everything you need for a relaxing break in Cornwall. Garry and Kathleen are extremely friendly and welcoming and ensure your holiday is perfect. The beach is only a mile away and other attractions are within easy reach. The setting is very peaceful with engine houses adding to the scenery. We have been coming to Old Basset for 17 years and look forward to every visit. A truly special place.

We’ve been staying at Wheal Basset Farm for about 20 years and can’t think of anywhere better for a lovely relaxing holiday. Old Basset Cottage is a home from home, where everything you could possibly need is provided. The setting is beautiful, away from the hustle and bustle yet only a mile down the road to the lovely beach and amenities at Porthtowan. Now our family has expanded, we have the caravan as well, which enables us all to get together. We’ve enjoyed many evening barbecues, watched over by Garry’s gorgeous, curious cows!
Kathleen and Garry are fantastic hosts, they really care about their guests and ensure that every little detail is perfect. We couldn’t contemplate a year without our holiday with them.

Another wonderful stay at this delightful cottage which is very well equipped and perfectly placed to visit the rest of Cornwall. The farm is situated in lovely countryside and makes for a very peaceful holiday.
Garry and Kathleen do everything they can to ensure all of their guests enjoy a wonderful holiday and this is why we return year after year.

Upon arrival we were immediately struck by how clean and well equipped the cottage was, the kitchen was well stocked with all the cutlery, dishes etc. that you may need, we were even supplied with a T.V. Listing Mag!
If you want a quiet location near to the beach then this is for you.
The hosts Kathleen and Garry were very friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble, just wish that we'd discovered the cottage years before, but we've found it now and will definitely return.

Another fabulous week on holiday in this cottage. For 34 years I have been staying with this family for holidays in the summer and autumn. We adore them and the setting. If you are looking for a peaceful stay, surrounded by nature and close to the sea… this is it! Thank you for always making us feel so welcome!

This was our eighth year at Old Bassett Cottage. Set in a peaceful location the cottage is well equipped, spotlessly clean, has plenty of space and has little ‘extras’ that make all the difference between this and other holiday lets; in fact, it feels more like being allowed to stay in a friend’s home! Kathleen and Garry could not be more helpful, suggesting places to visit and eat at and locations for walks, as well as being founts of local knowledge.
We were three generations and there is plenty in this area for all of us. Quiet walks and lovely restaurants for the ‘oldies’ and enough activities to occupy energetic grandchildren. The lovely beach at Porthtowan is a twenty minute walk away.
We’ve already booked for next year!

Old Basset cottage really is the most wonderful place, and that is the reason we continue to return year after year. The cottage is gorgeous, spacious and comfortable, and always spotlessly clean. It has everything you could need- indeed, the kitchen is far better equipped than my own at home! The owners make us feel so welcome and go above and beyond to make sure everything is just right. The location is perfect; set on a small farm it is quiet and peaceful. It is beautiful everywhere you look, and I always feel relaxed when there. My children love it as they have lots of space to explore and run around. A short drive from the fabulous Porthtowan beach and well located to visit many of Cornwall’s attractions, we are finding new things to do every year. I can not recommend this place highly enough and none of us can ever see a time when we would not want to return here.

Have been coming to Old Basset Cottage for a number of years and every visit is an exceptional experience. It is in a great location for exploring all of Cornwall with many very local delights too.
The cottage is superbly equipped with every detail catered for.
Owners Garry and Kathleen are the most wonderful hosts you could wish for. They have lived the dream of running a family farm and love to share their smallholding with their guests.
To keep coming back year after year is a testament in itself.

This was our 8th visit to Old Basset Cottage. The cottage is in an ideal position for visiting other areas of Cornwall and set in peaceful surroundings. It is very well equipped and spotlessly clean and the owners are very friendly and helpful. The beautiful beach is only about a mile away and there are several pubs/eating places nearby. We always enjoy our holidays here!

Kathleen and Garry are very welcoming and knowledgeable hosts. The cottage is spacious and well equipped with lovely period features which enhance the atmosphere and add to a memorable stay. The beautiful location is great for walking and also touring the local area. We have booked our fifth visit, the previous four have been among the highlights of each year and we always look forward to returning.

Where to start? What a place to stay. We stay at Wheal Basset Cottage during the summer with our little boy. It is such a welcoming and wonderful place to base ourselves.
